Farm Bagno Romano Barbara Rae
This small and mysterious painting - which reveals the artist's habit of pouring and blending liquid pigment onto her ground and creating an image which is overlain with touches, scribbles and marks of her brush - epitomises Rae's capacity to evoke sensations of place and time, fused together into a work of art.
This rich and sombre work probably dates from the late 1990s. The decade marks the point at which Rae's attachment to the landscape of the North-West Highlands of Scotland was extended to include Spain, Italy and the Americas. She employed an array of dark colours, which incorporates a hint or shimmer of something brighter - a promise, a revelation. Works (mostly larger, on board) suffused with a similar range of velvet hues were included in Rae's 1996 exhibition of New Paintings, with Art First, then in Cork Street, London. This was the year in which Rae left her teaching role in Glasgow School of Art and embarked on a period of travelling, working and exhibiting, with even more dedication and energy than hitherto.
This picture has a new mount, but we have retained what we believe to be the original frame.
