The details in the foreground, in the shadow of the ancient arch and associated buildings, are intriguing. They require close study and they are full of narrative and poetic interest. But the real glory of this picture - and of so many similar ones of the North Africa and the Near East - is the ability to capture that broad, azure sky, which here shines from the centre of the watercolour.
